Narrated by Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker, Triumph is not a sports film as much as it is a unique window into America’s civil rights movement that chronicles Perry Wallace’s evolution from a reluctant pioneer in the final throes of the Jim Crow era to a determined game-changer.

Meanwhile, Hap and Florence Jackson (Rob Morgan, Mary J. Blige) — fellow sharecroppers who have worked the land for generations — struggle bravely to build a small dream of their own despite the rigidly enforced social barriers they face.

Director/Producer: Valerie Red-Horse Mohl

Mankiller examines the legacy of the formidable Wilma Mankiller, who overcame rampant sexism and personal challenges to emerge as the Cherokee Nation’s first female Principal Chief and a champion of social justice and equality. A stalwart activist for women's rights, Mankiller was cited by the organizers of the 2017 Women's March on Washington as one of the most important leaders in America's movement for equality. And yet, most people still don’t know her name. Mankiller reminds audiences of the true meaning of servant leadership and serves as a wakeup call to take action for positive change.

Triumph: The Untold Story of Perry Wallace
(USA, 96 min)

Writer: Rich Gentile, Eli Spielman, Bruce Johnson
Director: Rich Gentile

Whenever the phrase “breaking the color line” is used, there’s a temptation to invoke Jackie Robinson’s story. However, Perry Wallace, the first black college athlete in the Southeast Conference, was a mere teenager who stood all alone at center court in such hotbeds of rabid racism as Starkville, Mississippi and Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Into the Night; Portraits of Life and Death
(USA, 121 min)

Writer/Director: Helen Whitney

We don’t know how. We don’t know when. But death comes for us all. To be human is to wrestle with this truth and with the great unanswered question: How do we live with death in our eye? We can deny, we can rail, we can challenge, we can accept. What is our story, and will it sustain us at the end? “Into the Night: Portraits of Life and Death,” a two-hour documentary, features men and women of uncommon eloquence and intelligence who are grappling with these questions. For them death is no longer an abstraction far off in the future, it is real. They come from all walks of life, all ages, dying and healthy, believers and unbelievers, well known and obscure. These are people who have been shocked into mortality and are forever changed. They have stories to tell, and we can listen and learn from them.

I, TONYA
(USA, 119 min)

Writer: Steven Rogers
Director: Craig Gillespie
Cast: Margot Robbie, Allison Janney, Sebastian Stan, Bobby Cannavale

Based on the unbelievable, but true events, I, TONYA is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan. Featuring an iconic turn by Margot Robbie as the fiery Harding, a mustachioed Sebastian Stan as her impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, a tour-de-force performance from Allison Janney as her acid-tongued mother, LaVona Golden, and an original screenplay by Steven Rogers, Craig Gillespie’s I, TONYA is an absurd, irreverent, and piercing portrayal of Harding’s life and career in all of its unchecked––and checkered––glory.

Among the most morally murky episodes in late-20th-century US politics — and that's a crowded field — was the drowning of campaign specialist Mary Jo Kopechne in what would become known as the Chappaquiddick Incident. Kopechne was trapped in a car that Senator Ted Kennedy drove off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts, following a night of festivities. This sombre, suspenseful recreation of the accident and its aftermath, directed by John Curran, invites us to speculate on how this shameful scandal came to be.
