Bloodline: The Family Noir
We all have our demons. The Rayburns seem to have more than most. With their storied, dynastic image of small business success and solid moral fiber, the Rayburns seem like the very picture of the American dream. But veiled beneath gentility and a respectable legacy lurk secrets so dark they could destroy the family reputation for good. With the family’s second son, a detective, as its protagonist and narrator, this critically acclaimed show fuses the family drama with the elements of an ominous television noir. Hear from Bloodline’s co-creator Todd A. Kessler about the genesis and development of this “family noir.”

Indie Film Track: Crowdfunding to Build Independence
The only proven path to independence as an artist is a direct connection to your audience. Crowdfunding is becoming a fundamental piece of most financing plans for independent films. However, many filmmakers miss the opportunity to turn their film funding campaigns into audience-building opportunities that can last an entire career and provide the groundwork for theatrical distribution that you control. This class for film-related projects will provide the crowdfunding action plan most likely to create a lasting, flourishing, direct relationship with your audience. In this workshop, you'll learn how to find your audience, how to structure your crowdfunding campaign, how to pick the right goal and backer incentives, and much more. This class is the reason crowdfunding campaigns on Seed&Spark have the highest success rate in the world (over 80% in 2017).

Tampering with Temporal Elements
Eat your heart out, H.G. Wells. Sometimes it's okay to tamper with time. Manipulating a narrative's timeline can be a powerful structural device as well as a strong vehicle for emphasizing character, theme, and a writer's voice. If employed correctly, unconventional temporal elements can enhance and liberate a story in ways traditional narratives cannot. Join this discussion on ditching the passé “beginning-to-end” model in favor of a more nuanced approach. While there are no set rules to successfully deconstructing a storyline, panelists will offer their best advice and techniques on how to create nonlinear structures.

The 2017 Screenwriters to Watch
Screenwriters are, of course, the perennially overworked, underappreciated artists whose hearts, souls, and lifeblood the movie world depends on. Since its inception in 1993, Austin Film Festival has worked diligently to erode the “underappreciated” element by championing screenwriters through the Conference, film programs, and screenplay/teleplay competitions. For the second year, AFF partnered with MovieMaker Magazine to highlight filmmakers with different backgrounds and at different stages in their careers: promising creators who possess original voices, keen storytelling sensibilities, and bright and buzzy futures. Join this panel to meet just a few of 2017’s “25 Screenwriters to Watch” as they impart major turning points in their careers and important lessons learned along the way.

This panel is co-presented by MovieMaker Magazine.

Speaking Truth to Power: How Entertainment Can Tackle the Thorniest Social Issues (and Change the World)
No one needs a reminder that social issues in America and worldwide are at a boiling point. In the words of Oscar Wilde,“If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they’ll kill you.”  Whether it’s a laugh, a jump scare, or just a really good story, you can engage and provoke a debate through entertainment and that is the privilege and responsibility of the artist. This panel discusses how film and television can reveal truth and change minds under guise of entertaining the audience. Or did someone tap a teacup?

Great Adaptations
Book-to-film adaptations may sound like they’re a walk in the park – they’re equipped with a thorough storyline, highly developed characters, and of course, a built-in fan base – but the art of writing them is as advantageous as it is demanding. Characters in novels have an elaborately developed inner life, and visually depicting subtext and nuance in a compelling narrative can be a challenge, especially within the constraints of a 90-minute film. Screenwriters behind some of recent history’s greatest adaptations will discuss translating themes and literary devices to the screen, working with authors, and where and when to take creative liberties.

Indie Film Track: The Actor/Director Relationship
In the world of independent film, everyone on a production does, well, everything: directors write, actors produce, and someone’s mom does props. But on a shoot, amidst the chaos of doing a million other jobs, building a good actor-director relationship is crucial to making the film a success. As a director, how can you be an effective creative leader, even as you’re setting locations and dealing with last-minute script changes? And as an actor, how can you put in the focus necessary for your craft even while you feel pressure to pick up other duties on a production? Seasoned independent filmmakers will give you tips on how to make the most of this delicate dynamic.

Writing a Worthy Nemesis: Your Protagonist's Shadow
There is nothing like a well-drawn nemesis to enliven a screenplay by functioning as a worthy foe to the protagonist and creating the story’s central conflict.

In this presentation with Scott Myers, you will learn the key principles to crafting a nemesis who goes beyond the stereotypical bad guy to a living, breathing, and powerful antagonist figure.

Endings: The Good, the Bad, and The Insanely Great - The Movie
Some movies leave you indifferent, some leave you satisfied, and some leave you feeling euphoric—walking on air and seeing the world through new eyes. What, then, is the difference between a bad ending, a good ending, and an insanely great ending? Join screenwriter Michael Arndt for a work-in-progress screening of the new video version of his lecture: Endings: The Good, The Bad, and the Insanely Great.  In this cinematic version of an AFF favorite, Arndt explores how great endings work with a close analysis of the climaxes of Star Wars, The Graduate, and his own screenplay, Little Miss Sunshine.  Stick around after the screening for an extended Q&A with Arndt.
