The once prosperous city of Detroit is going bankrupt and emergency manager Kevyn Orr searches for cash to pay off Detroit creditors by plundering the city’s assets. One of these assets is the Detroit Institute of Art, which houses one of the richest collections in the US. Beauty and Ruin follows the story of the bankruptcy and the fight over the artwork as Detroit goes into receivership. At the top on the list of those the city owes money to are the thousands of retired city workers who stand to have their pensions and health care cut drastically. Art and culture or food and healthcare?
